John Pombe Magufuli served as Tanzania’s president having held office for almost six years. He has had a long career in Tanzanian politics and was recently thought to have been battling Covid-19 at a hospital in Nairobi due to his long uncharacteristic absence from the public eye.
Magufuli succumbed to heart related disease while receiving treatment at Mzena Hospital, Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania’s office of the president is yet to be assumed by Samia Suluhu who yet to be sworn in.

Magufuli began his schooling at Chato Primary School in 1967, proceeding to Katoke Seminary, then Lake Secondary School completing in 1978. Mkwawa High School was his next institution taking up his higher studies in preparation for his Diploma studies at Mkwawa. He then joined the University of Dar es Salaam for his bachelor’s degree, masters and postgraduate degrees. He further has an honorary doctorate degree conferred at the University of Dodoma.

He began his career journey as a teacher at Sengerema Secondary School following his earlier training in the field. A job as an industrial chemist was the last role he held before diving into the political arena in 1995. His entry position was as an MP representing the people of Chato.
He proved himself in his first term being nominated for a position as Deputy Minister for Works and from then operated and worked in different ministries including the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries and the Ministry of Lands and Human Settlement. He ran for presidency in 2015 under the CCM party ticket and won the seat. He ran for a re-election in 2020 which he won.
His presidency came with several changes such as massive cuts on government expenditure in salaries and all kinds of expenses having the savings going towards improving Tanzania’s sanitation and healthcare systems. Despite that, his tenures have been oppressive to opposing parties and special interest groups especially the LGBTQ citizens. He imposed stringent rules and regulations that make it very difficult for them to lead normal lives.
He does not respect human rights and his leadership has been questioned by several entities. For instance, he led Tanzanians in believing that the coronavirus had been eliminated from the country through prayer and organized for public celebration. This was a worrying scenario considering the severity of the virus spread.

Magufuli’s wife is a school teacher, as was Magufuli years back, called Janeth Magufuli. The couple has two children – Jesicca and Joseph Magufuli.
