The character in the books is a 6-foot-5, kind of hulk man. Tom Cruise not. Neither critics nor audiences were overly impressed, and that would be much cratered after the thoroughly mediocre second installment, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. The uninitiated size of the actor may seem like a minor concern. But Reacher is a stripped-down, elemental character, taking away his akin to replacing Reacher’s persona. The novels he appears in are initially sturdy but familiar building blocks. The Reacher books are purchased precisely because you know what you’re getting and are unlikely to be disappointed when you arrive at your final destination.
