The summer school, which was originally introduced because of corona-related learning deficits, is starting as a pilot project in Altach and Höchst.
On Monday, the summer school began for the third time in Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, and this time almost 40,000 students nationwide are taking advantage of the two-week offer. Originally introduced to catch up on learning deficits caused by corona, the summer school is now also open to students without special needs. The aim this year is to better integrate the summer school and after-school care offers from the federal states, said Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) on Tuesday.
The summer school can be offered all day for the first time this year. In Burgenland, for example, there is an additional afternoon program at 20 locations, in Vorarlberg pilot tests are running in Altach and Höchst and in Vienna, according to the ministry, there is cooperation with the Summer City Camps. This year’s summer school for 17,200 schoolchildren has already begun in the East, and the other federal states will follow next Monday.
There was also an expansion in terms of content this year: in addition to German and mathematics (as well as general studies in elementary school), this time there are also offers for English. In addition to remedial teaching, the children and young people should be able to deepen their teaching content or prepare for final exams, the transition after the 4th or 8th grade or participation in school competitions such as the Chemistry Olympiad. There are also German courses for schoolchildren who have fled Ukraine. According to the ministry, additional extensions are planned for 2023.
At elementary, middle and special schools as well as AHS lower levels, the summer school takes place as project lessons in small groups with six to 15 children, four fifths of the registrations relate to these school types. There is a course system at the upper levels. In total there are almost 1,000 summer school locations this year. Participation remains voluntary for students, while teaching students and teachers (around 1,500 each) hold the classes.
Since its introduction in 2020, the summer school has been continuously developed, Polaschek emphasized on Tuesday when visiting a summer school location in Vienna. It is an attractive childcare option for parents, while students studying to become teachers can gain practical school experience here. This time efforts were made to bring students to all regions. It is also hoped that the buddy model, in which particularly good students will loosen up the lessons, will get young people excited about the teaching profession. A separate buddy academy is planned for this group at the teacher training colleges (PH).
