Thimphu.
The Buddhist kingdom of Bhutan will soon be welcoming tourists back into the country. However, visitors then have to pay a higher fee.

After a long Corona break, the small kingdom of Bhutan wants to welcome regular holidaymakers again soon – but they will then have to pay a significantly higher tourist tax than before the pandemic.

From September 23, foreign guests are to pay a sustainable development fee of US$200 per night, said director-general of the Bhutan Tourism Council Dorji Dhradul. Previously, the fee was $65. The increase ensures that tourists are really helping the country, which absorbs more climate emissions than it emits, to develop sustainably.

General well-being more important than economic growth

Bhutan lies between India and China. Its fewer than 800,000 inhabitants depend heavily on tourism. According to the United Nations, the country is one of the least developed countries in the world. In Bhutan, the philosophy is that the general well-being of the people is more important than economic growth. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the country has allowed practically no foreign guests into the country with strict Covid measures. The reason: Security in the face of the dangerous virus is more important than tourists’ money.

Vacationers have traditionally had to pay for tour packages that cost $250 per night and include lodging, meals, transportation and the Sustainable Development Fee. This regulation is now being relaxed, trips can then be put together more individually. (dpa)
