The State Parents’ Conference of North Rhine-Westphalia demands a free ticket for local public transport for all schoolchildren.
The State Parents’ Conference of North Rhine-Westphalia has called for the introduction of a free ticket for local public transport for all schoolchildren in the state. This is important for more education with equal opportunities, but also with a view to climate protection, emphasized the LEK board.
Currently, the requirements in NRW school law for a discounted ticket are linked to “unfair conditions”. Whether a student receives such a ticket or not depends on the length of the walk to the school. The association complained that the financial situation of the family or the number of children was not taken into account.
“Unfair” conditions for a discounted ticket
The current inflation puts families, who were previously able to finance a self-paying ticket for their children, in a difficult situation. Many stayed “on the track” in the truest sense of the word.
The LEK board of directors appealed to Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) to introduce a free education ticket for all schoolchildren across the country. The temporary 9-euro ticket has shown that it also enables many children to take part in other educational opportunities and holiday activities.
