Our review of the indie highlights of the games fair Gamescom may have been a little late, but it is an affair of the heart for us. For many of the visitors in Cologne, the steadily growing indie arena is sometimes the highlight of the entire trade fair. Here you can discover real pearls and play (without waiting for hours), often even get in direct contact with developers and maybe even get inspiration to get your own project off the ground. And of course you discover titles that are exciting, interesting, innovative, wacky or just fun, and that you are only too happy to put on your wish list. Of course, we also kept our eyes open for outstanding indie games at Gamescom and are providing you with an overview.
You miss Obsidian’s new work in our highlight list? Pentiment may seem like an indie title, but developer Obsidian’s budget is likely to be a lot higher than that of the average indie developer. We have recorded our impressions of Pentiment in the preview at this point.
But now, without further ado, to the heroes of the small development teams: we’re part of the beginning Under The Waves. Developed by Parallel Studio, the scenic North Sea adventure is the brainchild of just three developers, who have won multiple awards for titles like White Night.
In the depths of the sea, the protagonist in Under the Waves deals with a stroke of fate, confronts frightening figments of his imagination and explores the incredibly beautiful world that lies beneath the surface of the water. The story-driven single-player adventure is scheduled for release in 2023 for PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5. The publisher is Quantic Dream, known for adventures like Heavy Rain or Detroit: Become Human.

Heavier fare is served up in this hospital tale starring anthropomorphic animal characters. Admittedly, the setting almost sounds daunting. But the story, which follows the footsteps of a young doctor who struggles through the ailing health system, is told with a lot of love.
The emotional plot is broken up with cynical wit; the mechanics also contribute to the distraction, so that Fall of Porcupine doesn’t weigh down on you that much. Combat interludes, mini-games and jump’n’run interludes alternate and thus form a narrative of a completely different kind. A demo is available on Steamthe game will be released on PC and Xbox consoles.
In De-Exit: Eternal Matters you end up in the Mexican realm of the dead, where you eke out your existence as a skeleton. However, you are slowly being forgotten in the world of the living, and that means your end as well on the level of memory in which you currently exist.
To prevent this and to unravel a few more secrets along the way, you have to solve puzzles and sneak past demonic death guards and absorb the unique atmosphere of the brick-like world.
The title particularly stands out due to the cinematic narrative style, which not only scores with impressive pictures, but also with a great soundtrack. There is no official release date yet, but it is already known that the title will be released for all common platforms, i.e. PC, PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Xbox X/S.

Back to animals doing human jobs! In Diluvian Winds you will find yourself as a lighthouse keeper walrus. In this management development game, you host trade caravans that travel by ship and take a little break from their arduous journeys with you. However, this is not really granted to them, because you need strong hands to help build rooms, produce resources and cook for the whole team.

The daily routine is divided into several phases and every decision affects the next phase. In addition to the basic supply of the more or less voluntary working drones, you also have to maintain the lighthouse and stoke the fire so that no accident happens.
The whole thing combined with a morale system results in an amazingly complex game that, with its sparse animations, seems more contemplative and easier to get started than it actually is. Diluvian Winds is scheduled to be released for Nintendo Switch and PC, but unfortunately it is not yet known when exactly.
Maybe not the morally best, but the most lucrative way we propose Serial Cleaners a, the sequel to 2017’s Serial Cleaner. As in the first game, you have to clean up the tracks of a horrible massacre while the police are already on the scene.

Sneaking around, carrying corpses around, wiping up blood and destroying evidence right under the eyes of the luckily not too vigilant police: Yes, the AI is not necessarily groundbreaking, but the whole thing is still fun. While the graphic style has changed a lot from the first to the second part, the stealth cleaning is still a lot of fun. Anyone who wants to earn an imaginary extra wage from the virtual mafia can do so from September 22, 2022 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch.
Let’s continue on page 2!
