Buying motorcycle insurance in Pennsylvania has different things to consider than buying regular car insurance. The main difference is that Pennsylvania law requires auto insurance to have a minimum coverage of $5,000 in health insurance benefits, also known as “no-fault” or PIP coverage.
However, Pennsylvania law does not require medical insurance for motorcycle insurance. In fact, many motorcycle insurers in Pennsylvania do not offer health insurance.
Another key difference is that there is no “limited tort” for motorcycle insurance in PA. When it comes to car insurance in PA, you must choose either limited or total tort. Full tort is more expensive but protects your right to make a claim for personal injury/pain and suffering (there is no threshold requirement for a “grave injury” with full tort). With motorcycle coverage in PA, basically all claims are fully unlawful.
The other major difference in PA is that under the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Financial Responsibility Law, it is more difficult for a health insurer to transfer or repay a lien on an auto accident settlement or recovery. The health insurance plan must be of a specific type. However, for motorcycle damage, your health insurance does not have the same limitations and therefore has a better chance of being reimbursed from an insured event. That may be more of a reason for you to consider health insurance when purchasing motorcycle insurance in PA.
Another difference is that if you’re injured in a car, you’re more likely to “stack” or combine other separate home insurance policies. For example, let’s say your brother lives with you and has a separate insurance policy – you may be able to get additional coverage for a car accident under his policy. If you’re in a motorcycle accident in Pennsylvania, any home auto insurance policy often has an exclusion—that’s not coverage—if you were a motorcycle occupant. So in this case you could not stack, i.e. combine, your motorcycle insurance with home contents insurance.
CONSIDER IT:
If you don’t have health insurance, you should look into finding a motorcycle insurer and a policy that includes health insurance. Because if you don’t have health insurance for your motorcycle, your health insurance will cover the costs.
If you have questions, you should make sure your agent explains the coverage to you.
You should also insure the motorcycle against property damage. Keep all receipts for custom parts or accessories. If you ever have damage to your motorcycle, you will need the receipts.
