Among the many dog dominance behaviors that are surrounded by perhaps more myths than any other are problems with dog mounting and female dog bucking. No, contrary to popular belief, these obnoxious instinctual dog behaviors have absolutely nothing to do with sex. But how embarrassing for those who don’t know!
“Don’t worry,” I said to one customer, who was bright red as he watched his male pup attempt to mount mine. Obviously the builder wanted to dig a hole and hide. He was humiliated! His dog continued to aggressively attempt to step on and bang my dog, especially in the head. (My good-natured big dog shook him off easily.)
“I didn’t know my dog was gay” he said very embarrassed and apologetic. I couldn’t hold back my laughter as I assured the man it wasn’t. How common is this misconception? In the dog world, there is no such thing as a “gay dog”!
A dog stepping over another’s head or even baring his penis is fairly common. The Rising Dog is earnestly trying to take control of everyone else. The undressing is intended to release his scent onto the other dog to announce to everyone else that he has won the fight for that one.
Remember this fact: if a male mounts a female for mating purposes, his equipment does not miss its mark. He doesn’t fail to place it in the right place. If his intentions towards another male were sexual, it would be done. Notice that when he rides up behind the other dog, his aim is OVER the tail and back, not under the tail. This is NOT sexual! Riding on another dog’s back lifts the first dog above him. It’s a reminder “Hey, you’re not the boss here!”
When the dog climbs on another’s head, he is going to one of the most extreme displays of dominance in the canine world. The head is the highest part of the dog. Bringing the head down brings the dog down from its highest point. It’s about who is higher than whom.
When a dog bares its penis and releases fluid, this forces the dog being licked to carry the scent of the dominant. It is a very strong scent and lingers for some time, making the low rank evident for many miles – and even to other packs within scent range.
Dogs are constantly trying to dominate each other. This is the instinctive behavior of dogs, under the rituals they go through every time they meet. The dogs will initially assess each other through eye contact. If you lie down, the tour is done. If not, the battle for supremacy really begins.
As they struggle for the dominant dog position, the dogs continue to mount each other until one submissively turns and averts his gaze. Until the eyes have completely averted, the surrender has not occurred and the dog that loses may attempt a sneak attack against the other. Danger!
we homo sapiens usually prefer the challenge of a game like rock-paper-scissors, a mind game like chess or scrabble, or a socially acceptable ball game. It’s less embarrassing for the public.
You’ve sometimes seen dogfights break out as the dogs jostle for position by wrestling or staring down. Usually, however, one dog raises its head higher than the other and the one with the lower head gives up.
This is clearly an instinctive canine behavior, a ritual that dogs often go through. I encourage anyone interested to consult experts and study this canine dominance behavior for themselves. Dog hump women and dog assembly issues have nothing to do with sex and they CAN be solved. Remember there is no such thing as one “GAY DOG!”
