There is a specific type of coverage option that is often included with standard home insurance that many people are not aware of. This is called property damage coverage with Good Neighbors. For people who have it, and many have it, it gives you great protection for damage caused to your neighbor’s house for which you would be held liable.
How does it work? Easy. Insurance coverage exists for damage that occurs to a neighboring house because you cut down a tree and let it crash into its fence. Or there is insurance cover if your children are playing ball in the front yard and a ball goes through a neighbor’s window. Surprisingly, insurance coverage also applies if your neighbor can prove that your children intentionally damaged his house.
Damage caused by pets to the neighboring house is also covered with this good neighborhood insurance. If your dog chews a hole in their fence or invades your neighbor’s house and destroys their carpet or furniture, you’re covered.
The amount of coverage offered varies from insurance company to insurance company, but most coverage limits are between one thousand and two thousand dollars. The best part is that there is no deductible to pay in the event of a claim. Just contact your insurance company and explain what happened. Sometimes you have to come out of your own pocket to repair the damage and then wait for reimbursement. In other cases, the check will be mailed immediately once the damage to your neighbor’s home is determined.
