Beagles patient family companions
Beagles have always been great family dogs, but until recently they were the least boasted about. Beagles are not universally praised as family dogs, they have not been included in the family dog rankings. However, in recent years, more and more families and people are showing their love for beagles in the family!
The American Kennel Club includes Beagles on their list of the 10 Best Family Dog Breeds
Best Traits of Beagles Loving Families
Families choose the Beagle because he’s a fun, easygoing, tolerant, and gentle dog. They are a medium-sized dog breed. They are very active and curious by nature.
Beagles get along well with children and other animals or pets. They are sniffer dogs and benefit from plenty of outdoor time and scent-based games and challenges. Challenging their minds also helps them be calm and easy to deal with.
Your grooming needs are minimal. Brushing about once a week is sufficient. Expect some spillage. Worse in spring as their winter coat thickness thins in preparation for summer.
Some Challenging Beagle Traits
Although Beagles make wonderful family dogs, they do have some challenging traits. Some of their less than desirable qualities include:
- Requires MODERATE DAILY EXERCISE – if you are looking for a lap dog this is NOT the breed for you
- You can be stubborn – training takes time and perseverance
- They are Scent Hounds – Sometimes a scent overwhelms their senses and even your commands! Unless you have solid obedience training, they can be a lot to deal with!
All breeds have their challenges, however, and families who choose to own a Beagle are happy to share their experiences. While researching for this post I found a special video that really shows what special moments are created when you have a Beagle in your family.
