According to a media report, “Aquaman” star Jason Momoa (43) wants to bring the story of surfing legend Duke Kahanamoku to the screen. Together with producer Peter Safran (“The Suicide Squad”), the actor will produce a biopic about the athlete from Hawaii, the industry journal “Variety” (online edition) reported yesterday.
Kahanamoku (1890–1968), a swimmer who won five Olympic medals, including three golds, between 1912 and 1924, popularized modern surfing. Originally the sport of Hawaiian kings, surfing was banned by European missionaries in the 19th century as a sin.
Hawaiian-born actor Momoa is best known for his role as DC superhero Aquaman, who rules the underwater kingdom of Atlantis and is able to communicate with marine life. He also played the warrior Khal Drogo in Game of Thrones. The Hollywood star is committed to protecting the oceans, including as an ambassador for the UN environmental program UNEP.
