Rooted: New survival game with Unreal Engine 5 and a pinch of The Last of Us

There can never be enough of survival games. Most of these are in Early Access, but the survival genre is a lot of fun for many players. What there can’t be enough of are games with a post-apocalyptic setting. So it’s perfect that Headlight Studio announced their new post-apocalyptic survival game Rooted at this year’s Gamescom, which you can explore either alone or with your friends.

Survival game Rooted clearly draws inspiration from The Last of Us

in the associated trailer we already get a pretty good impression of the game. A mysterious voice in the background tells us that we are safe from “bacteriological attacks” in our homes. Maybe that’s why the town shown in the trailer looks so deserted and reclaimed by nature. Or the houses weren’t as safe as originally thought.

This feeling of loneliness and isolation comes across quite well as the trailer progresses. The protagonist explores the abandoned remnants of civilization, searches for food in supermarkets and then transports it back to their own base. It bears a certain resemblance to the quite popular The Last of Us, as the title actually acted as inspiration for the Rooted scenery.

In the game itself you will probably need to build a camp to protect your resources from wild animals and other survivors. You can claim an abandoned house, use a certain floor of a building, or construct your very own shelter. The gameplay systems are also a bit reminiscent of Project Zomboid, but according to previous statements you probably don’t expect hordes of zombies in Rooted.

Rooted hasn’t received any release date yet, so it’s safe to assume we won’t see the title again this year. However, you can already rooted on your Steam Wishlist pack or follow the game. The developers promise to inform the community about their progress.
