The power of being present in a relationship

Dog Behavior Series 7 – Why Do Dogs Shake?

Whether you know it or not, you were born with the natural ability to meet people and form relationships. Even if you don’t spend a lot of time proactively building relationships, you should be able to point to numerous examples of relationship building with friends and co-workers.

Although we are all born with the ability to connect, some of us use this ability more than others. If you haven’t already harnessed your innate relationship-building skills, it’s time to unleash them on the world.

Don’t be a recluse

As long as you are not a recluse, you interact with people every day, such as the bus driver, a cleaner, a clerk at the local supermarket, customers and co-workers. However, you may not have a solid business network to fall back on.

That’s okay because it’s never too late to start. You probably have more people in your network than you think. Most of us have naturally built a network that has previously been largely untapped.

Take a trip down memory lane and think about the relationships you have formed with friends and co-workers. What have you done to develop these relationships?

Many of these relationships have arisen because of commonalities, e.g. B. because they live in the same neighborhood, go to the same school, work in the same company or play the same sport. For many people, building relationships starts with identifying these common elements and building on them.

Having something in common with another person provides a great foundation. Remember, relationships are formed with people we are comfortable with. Spend time surrounding yourself with such people. This is a great way to start growing your network.

focus on similarities

In addition to surrounding yourself with people you feel comfortable with, you should look for people who share similarities. Attend networking events focused on your industry, meet friends of friends, and connect with fellow alumni.

Whatever you decide to do, keep an open mind and focus on turning some of those encounters into new relationships. Nurture these new relationships so they can become part of your network.

At the same time, you must have confidence that you can meet people and build solid relationships. They have done it before and continue to do so with new friends and colleagues. The more you interact with people, the more confident you become.

Treat every time you talk to someone as practice for the next conversation. If you don’t feel comfortable attending a large event, practice at a small gathering at your church, company, or family gathering.

Try to be friends with all new contacts first, and then talk business later. You want to build comfort and confidence so that when business comes up, it’s a smooth transition.

The reason you want to build relationships this way is because people tend to do business with others who they consider friends. It’s important to always connect with people on a deeper level that goes well beyond business.

Practice talking to strangers

If you’re still not comfortable talking to new people in a business setting, practice talking to people when you go shopping, work out at the gym, take a cab, or stay at a hotel. This activity will make you more comfortable talking to complete strangers in all situations.

Since you already have these conversations naturally every day, you now need to be aware that they are happening and strengthen your relationship-building skills. Use this as an opportunity to practice conversational skills.

Never ignore any of these discussions because they could develop into good relationships. Take these encounters seriously because relationships are built in every situation. Techniques to practice include reciting your elevator pitch, asking insightful questions, and listening.

It is better to improve your conversational skills in a non-business environment. The old adage “practice makes perfect” applies to relationship building. Speaking is an innate ability. Use it to become more successful in business and in life.

You have a voice and you must exercise it. Professional athletes and musicians need constant practice before they can perform in a big game or performance.

Remember that people attend networking events to meet other people. You are never embarrassed to walk up to someone and start a conversation. Chances are that person is uncomfortable and will be grateful that you started the dialogue.

last thought

Remember that we are all born with the ability to build relationships. Don’t let this natural ability go to waste.
