“Tiger Woods just has this uncanny ability to crank it up even more if someone gets too close.” That was Chris DiMarco’s comment after he hit a very impressive 68 on the final round at Hoylake but still ended up 2 shots behind Tiger. Tiger Woods just wouldn’t give up. Tiger is mentally strong under pressure.
Would you like to have the same mental toughness? How can you achieve this mental strength?
As an example, let’s look at just one part of your game – your putting.
How do you practice?
Are you like most people who practice putting by throwing a bunch of golf balls at the local practice putting green and trying to hit a few in the hole? Or do you have one of those long indoor putting practice greens in your office? you know the kind You have a long strip of green felt that goes up to a cup, you just brush the ball up into the hole and some sort of mechanism throws it back at you. You do this over and over again, maybe a hundred times a day, a thousand times a week. And yet, if you want to play four-player with your friends, you can’t sink that last putt from left to right that would win you the game. And you can’t understand it – you had practiced so hard!
The reason you couldn’t sink the putt is simple. You haven’t developed into a mentally strong putter. Notice I said you missed “the last putt left to right”? As with most people, all of your practice came on a flat green that offered no real challenge. Whether you realize it or not, once you stand on a real green whose surface runs left-to-right, right-to-left, up or down, or any number of ways, you’re not really ready. Why not? Because you haven’t practiced like that. As with any other sport, your training must simulate how the real game plays out in all its infinite variations.
And when in your training did you put yourself under pressure to sink a putt? Most people think it’s just about practicing your putting stroke and transferring it to the putting green. But what about the mental aspects of the game? Have you incorporated this part into your putting practice to carry over to the putting green as well? Do you know, how? Do you have a method that measures your ability to sink a putt and know if you’re getting better or not?
Becoming a mentally strong putter requires practice that mimics real golf. Make sure you set up your practice routine to groove your shot but also develop the mental traits of a Tiger Woods.
