One of the biggest and most profound changes in my business was triggered by a book. My Stroke of Insight: A brain researcher’s personal journey by Jill Bolte Taylor described the change in her world view after a stroke.
Though thankfully I didn’t have a stroke, her book validated a similar shift I was going through as I sold my house and most of my belongings and became a conscious nomad. That was the trigger for my business coaching adventure. A wild and wonderful ride that I’m still on!
That’s why broad reading is a great thing. You never know what great new idea might come your way when you read that Asterix comic or that Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt biography.
Here are 5 books you’ll probably never read on a business book list. They are books that have significantly changed my business for the better. They could do the same for you!
1. Transformational Speaking: If you want to change the world, tell a better story by Gail Larsen
Not your usual book on speaking, Gail’s book is in no way a traditional guide to better PowerPoint slides or overcoming stage fright. It takes you on a journey that will help you clarify your core message and desired impact. You can be a passionate visionary. If you articulate your message authentically, you will have far more impact after this deep exploration of your inner self.
2. Time Warrior: How to Defeat Procrastination, Philanthropy, Self-Doubt, Over-Commitment, Broken Promises, and Chaos by Steve Chandler
Furious! This title is a big challenge for a short book. This is not your typical time management book. His fresh approach takes away your fear of the future. What you haven’t done yet. This problem you really aren’t sure how scared to be because you don’t even want to go there. Instead, Steve encourages you to go non-linear and take action, now in short chapters that elicit a quick response. This shift from thinking to doing will transform your relationship with your time.
3. Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX and the quest for an amazing future by Ashlee Vance
OK, that’s right – Elon Musk is a businessman and the book talks about his businesses. Also true – reading biographies of successful business people is valuable.
For this list of out of the box books, and what makes this book unique is hearing how this guy thinks. Calling it innovative doesn’t even begin to cover it. Elon makes connections you wouldn’t expect, something I hope reading these books will do for you!
More importantly, he’s willing to take action against her. No brilliant idea of yours or mine will matter if we do nothing.
After all, Elon thinks big. He treats people on Mars with the same no-nonsense problem-solving as solar roof tiles. He is not held back by fear that his vision is “too big.”
Check out the book – you’ll never feel the same way about your business again.
4. The Surrender Experiment: My Journey Into Life’s Perfection by Michael Singer
Oprah’s Emmy-winning SuperSoul Sunday guest and also author of The unbound soulMichael Singer describes his experience of deep devotion to life. He decided to accept whatever came his way and no longer let his fears or even desires dictate his life.
Through this practical spirituality, he created the environment for spiritual freedom and outer success, and in the process founded a billion dollar company. Reading this book will make you look at your own life in a very different way.
5. The Elephant Whisperer: My Life with the Herd in the African Wilderness by Lawrence Anthony
I feel a deep connection to elephants. Tears run down my face spontaneously when I see them in the wild. Elephants have an amazing ability to communicate and bond.
In this book, the late animal rights activist Lawrence Anthony takes you on a heartwarming, funny and poignant experience with elephants. When Lawrence died, the elephants in this book traveled freely to his home and watched over him. They knew. They wanted to pay homage. Her connection to Lawrence ran deep.
Elephants have made me rethink the way I connect with my community. Your business is built on connections. It doesn’t work without her. What you do with it is always open to innovation. This book will help you look at connections and nurture them with new eyes.
Who you become when you reach your goals is critical to helping you achieve them. I encourage you to check out these books. They will stimulate your thinking and maybe inspire you to grow in new ways and create something great in your business!
