Some time ago my daughter asked me to name three books in my field that you absolutely must read – which of course is personal development. I didn’t have to think long – I immediately replied that my top three recommendations were:
How to Find Your True Self by Mildred Mann
Deepak Chopra’s 7 Laws of Spiritual Success
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey
I think that’s the best order to read them. In this article I will outline why I think these books are essential reading for any student of the subject. Let’s take them in turn…
There is only one message in Mildred Mann’s book, but it is an important message and one I hope you will accept. It is this… You are here with a purpose – you are not an accident – your life has purpose and value.
The book is beautifully written, and it’s the only one of my three recommendations that’s in the public domain — meaning you can get a copy for free and read it for yourself; this is something i hope you will do!
Deepak Chopra’s book The 7 Spiritual Laws of Success is the product of much thought and soul searching. In it he outlines the path to success that is revealed as a result of connecting with the universal Spirit of God. I particularly like the language of this book – it’s almost like reading poetry at times. It’s really rich and full of goodness – it makes you feel better just reading or listening to the words. I personally have the book on CD and occasionally play it in my car on long trips.
The 7 Spiritual Laws are sequential and you will find them building on the message and work of Mildred Mann. Although Mildred Mann writes from the Christian tradition and Deepak Chopra writes from a Buddhist perspective, I personally find no contradiction or difficulty in the substance of the matter.
For many people who have studied Law of Attraction style books and courses, there seems to be a missing connection between the spiritual side of the process of creation/manifestation and the practical side of the process. This gap is bridged perfectly with Stephen Covey’s book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.
The 7 Habits are a well-adapted approach to succeeding in life; Balancing the need for character development versus the need to collaborate creatively with other people. Often people don’t see the need for character development as a foundation for personal growth, but that message is central to the book.
It’s a sequential approach – easy to understand but deceptively powerful. In my experience, not everyone can immediately grasp the true power of these behavioral habits, but when they are applied to your life and become a part of the way you work, you can achieve truly outstanding results – you can achieve anything you set your mind to do.
If you take the time to read these three classic works and absorb the important messages, you will find that they complement each other, but each focuses on a different aspect of the subject. This gives you a wonderfully complete and holistic view of how to achieve real success in life.
