introduction

You are either reading this because you are a man thinking about ballroom dancing or a woman trying to figure out how to get a man to learn ballroom dancing. In any case, the article is all about why men should learn ballroom dancing.

There are 4 main reasons why a man should learn ballroom. They are style and sophistication, a challenge to learn and be more manly. I’ll talk about these one by one first.

style and sophistication

Who is probably the most stylish and sophisticated man and yet is a man? By the way, in considering this question, I will allow the consideration of fictional characters. You could come up with a number of possible answers, but the one that comes to mind is James Bond. Could you really imagine James Bond being such an amazing figure if he couldn’t dance?

Even when you’re not thinking about James Bond, just think about what would make a man that little bit more impressive. Make a list in your head. Chances are, you think knowing how to dance socially with a woman certainly fits this list. You may find excuses why it shouldn’t be, but deep down you know it’s there.

I’ll talk more about why it’s on this list later. However, I can now use an observation as to why you might think that.

Ballroom dancing is actually one of the greatest cultural contributions the West has made to the world. Living in China, I noticed that social dance had a perception similar to that of western martial arts. It was like a stereotype of the height of western culture. A friend of mine who is from Sri Lanka remarked that until the introduction of ballroom dancing, people only danced to worship the gods. Ballroom dancing brought a whole new perspective on dance. A very western point of view. When you learn ballroom dancing, you automatically learn about one of the most sophisticated aspects of a culture. You can’t help but be a little more sophisticated when you do this.

And we’re talking a kind of James Bond/Rhett Butler male sophistication here.

A challenge

What kind of man walks away from a challenge?

Ballroom dancing actually offers the kind of challenge that really gives a man a chance to assert himself.

It’s not just a physical challenge that can be overcome by simply increasing strength or speed. You have to master movement. You also have to face one of the biggest fears a man has: looking stupid. One of the reasons many men try to argue that they don’t need to learn to dance or that the ballroom isn’t for men is the fear that they’ll look stupid if they try.

The truth is that a man probably won’t look good when he tries to dance for the first time. He will then worry about how he looks when he first dances in company. Do you really think you should spend your life worrying about what other people think? Working towards a goal of sufficient mastery through such negative beliefs is an excellent challenge for any man. Ballroom dancing provides an excellent opportunity for such a challenge.

When you take on the challenge of ballroom dancing, you will know that you have truly accepted a challenge that has made you a better person.

To learn something and keep the brain active

Life can get pretty boring if you don’t learn anything new. When you start learning partner dance, a new world will open up to you. There’s the history, the culture, the physiology, the music, the steps, the routines and more.

You will not master this in a short time. Instead, as you learn more, you will find that there is more to learn again. This is part of the challenge I mentioned earlier. Social dance always gives you something to work on.

The best part, however, is that you can decide whether you want to get better at a particular dance, learn a new dance, or learn more moves for a dance. Whether it’s about depth or breadth of learning, ballroom dancing always has something to offer.

This alone can keep your brain healthy, but dancing also makes you think when you dance.

Not only do you have to pay attention to the woman you’re dancing with so you can guide her, but you also have to navigate the dance floor to avoid bumping into others. You must also do this while also staying on time. You have to pay attention to what you see, hear and feel. You then have to derive from these stimuli what to do next.

It’s this high cognitive load of dancing that makes social dancing the best way to prevent Alzheimer’s. Research has shown that social dancing is better than reading (twice as good) and crossword puzzles (about 1.5 times as good) when it comes to preventing dementia. If you want to keep your brain in shape (and you should), then social dancing is for you.

Rather be a man

You probably think partner dancing is a bit dated. Well, when it comes to gender roles, it certainly is. In everyday life you may never be like that, but in ballroom dancing a man is a leader. He holds and protects the woman he is dancing with as he leads her across the dance floor. He will hold her in trust to make her feel safe and secure. He will be physically strong but will offer a gentle hug so she can happily lose herself in the dance. Pretty much as you see it portrayed on TV.

You can offer that to a woman.

As a tango teacher I know once said, we cannot engage in such practices in everyday life. So dance gives us the opportunity to explore the sensations that come from being like this. By taking on ballroom dancing, a man gets the opportunity to show more of his masculine side so that he can better utilize it in his everyday life.

This alone can help a man become more confident and attractive to women. However, the fact that you can dance also makes you more attractive to women. Additionally, social dancing increases the close physical contact you will have with a number of women. This, too, will improve your self-confidence towards women and thus your attractiveness.

This confidence is on top of the confidence that comes from simply taking on the challenge of dancing and the confidence that comes from the added sophistication that comes from knowing how to dance. Remember James Bond and Rhett Butler from back in the day.

summary

So if you are looking for reasons why a man should learn to dance, here they are:

  • sophistication
  • A challenge
  • Keep the brain healthy
  • Become more confident as a man

They certainly don’t accept ballroom dancing because it’s an easy option. They take it on because it’s a serious challenge that offers benefits worth the effort. You’ll probably find it confrontational, but that’s why you’re doing it.
