What is required to become an internet radio host?
- You should have a great personality
- You should be the kind of person who can get someone’s attention
- You should have something to say that people want to hear
- You should have a passion for speaking
- You need to interact with your audience
Captivating a radio audience is no easy task. Just think about it for a minute, getting not one, but many people to stop their lives to listen to what you have to say is an extraordinary task. It’s like you’re hypnotizing your audience and they just stick with what you have to say for the next thirty (30), sixty (60) or one hundred and twenty (120) minutes.
Step 1 Find an internet radio station to host your show.
You need to find an internet radio station that will sell you airtime. That’s correct. You have to buy the airtime. But unlike traditional land radio, it’s not that expensive. Radio time is usually sold in blocks.
You should also check out the radio station. You have to find out
- What kind of station are they. If it’s a country and western station and you’re a blues DJ, it probably doesn’t go well together.
- Do they have a talk show format? Do you have any talk shows on your station?
- Are they a 24 hour station? Will they schedule you at three in the morning?
- What is their lockdown time? If you want a 2 hour show 5 days a week, could you buy it Monday through Friday at the same time?
Step 2 Format, topic and type of broadcast
Your show format will determine what type of show you will have and how many listeners you will get. You should broadcast something that people want to hear. Some formats you could have would be
- Political Talk Shows
- sports talk shows
- Health and Wellness Talk Shows
- Religious talk shows
- Music shows (just pick a genre you like)
You need an interesting topic to hold the listener’s attention, such as:
Interviews with current newsmakers or local politicians
Controversial issues (economy, crime, global warming, education, etc.)
Interviews with book authors (who always want publicity)
Ridiculous things that really happened to you or a friend
Music parodies and internet memes
Sex & Relationships (Keep it clean)
health and fitness advice
Step 3 Should you have a co-host?
Having a co-host is a great idea. It gives you someone to talk to when callers are slow. A co-moderator can have a different point of view or even a completely opposite one. Listeners love to hear co-hosts argue! Just make sure your co-host is someone you respect and are comfortable disagreeing with. A co-host can also take over if you get sick or go on vacation. In other words, two talking heads are better than one.
Step 4 Promote your show.
Talk to people who are interested in listening before you start broadcasting. Talk to friends in your social, political, or religious groups and let them know in advance where and when you’re on the air. If a group has your ideal listener, visit them! Also, write a press release and send it to local newspapers — and a bunch of other freebie newspapers. Some hosts also maintain a website, sponsor local events, advertise in local newspapers, or place signs along major roads.
Some internet radio stations will place teasers (short radio adverts promoting your show) ahead of your new show, show your profile and picture on a show’s host page, and link to your website. What works really depends on your target audience – just ask yourself where your target audience gets information and reads ads!
Step 5 Sell advertising on your show.
Getting people to advertise on your show is how you will make money. Since you are buying your time from the internet radio station, you can take blocks of that time and sell them to local dealers. Advertising on the radio doesn’t have to mean the traditional 60-second spot with a goofy jingle.
Ideally, advertisers should offer a special offer that is only available to your listeners, as this would help them measure the effectiveness of their ads. You could actually make a good chunk of money with advertising alone.
A radio host’s popularity depends on how many listeners he can tune in to his show each time it’s on. The more listeners you have, the more radio stations or advertisers will show how popular you are.
