Mattel had launched this toy to accompany the Queen’s Jubilee. Since the announcement of his death, many owners have put them back on sale… with a good margin.
The Barbie Elizabeth II, launched last April by Mattel for the monarch’s platinum jubilee, is experiencing renewed interest on the internet. Four days after the death of the queen, which occurred Thursday at the age of 96, the price of the toy flies away on the resale sites.
This doll is part of a series created by the manufacturer, the Tribute Collection, intended to pay homage to female figures in contemporary history. These figurines are produced in limited editions and are destined to become collector’s items. And this is, obviously, the path taken by that of Elizabeth II: while it was sold for 75 dollars (about 70 euros) at the time of its launch, some owners resell their copy 15 times more expensive, sometimes at beyond, as spotted The Parisian.
Thousands of euros requested
On The good corner, e-bay or Amazon, the Elizabeth II Barbies on sale number in the tens… and their prices in the thousands: some are available for 400 to 800 dollars, many are offered for 900 to 1300 dollars, and some reach the heights: a localized retailer in the United States offers its copy for the sum of 5099 dollars.
One of these dealers answered questions from the Parisian. He explains that he tried for the first time to make a deal by reselling his copy after the queen’s jubilee, celebration of her 70 years of reign last June.
“I had set the price at 400 euros and I had only three offers in three months,” he recalls. “As soon as there was the first press release reporting worrying news about his health, on Thursday around 2 p.m., I received six offers in two hours. I took the opportunity to increase my selling price to 700 euros . And at the news of his death, the prices tripled or even quadrupled.”
Many Britons flocked to the castles of Windsor, Balmoral (place of his disappearance) or Buckingham to pay homage to their monarch. The coffin will be transported to London on Tuesday and taken to Westminster on Wednesday, where the public can come and pay their respects for a few days. The one who was known as Prince Charles was officially proclaimed new King Charles III on Saturday, two days after the death of his mother.
