Dog Behavior Series 7 – Why Do Dogs Shake?

Thinking about adopting a dog for your family?

If so, we think that’s great… but before you rush off to your local dog shelter, rescue group, or online adoption site, please consider whether your family is ready to accept the lifelong responsibility of being a canine guardian.

Then take some time to consider what type of dog would best suit the lifestyle of the family or individual who will be the dog’s guardian.

Puppies, for example, need a lot of attention in terms of grooming, feeding, house training, socialization, and exercise.

If your family is busy or you are caring for young children at the same time, consider adopting an older dog that may already be housebroken and will not require the same level of care that a puppy requires.

Are you looking for a companion dog for your mom or dad or another senior? Then please consider a senior dog. Senior dogs can make wonderful companions for seniors. They can be very gentle and good natured and the fact that they are in their golden years in terms of life expectancy may be the best choice for a senior who may not be able to support themselves now and for 15 or more years of age to take care of a puppy.

Do you know a special child or adult who may have a physical or other challenge? Some of the most wonderful experiences on record come from the interaction of disabled dogs with children and adults who have challenges. It seems a special bond develops between human and pooch as they tap into each other’s strengths and journey through life’s joys while supporting each other.

What about the cost of grooming a dog?

When you bring a new dog into your family or home, you are bringing home a new family member. If you have concerns about this concept, don’t buy a dog, buy a toy. Dogs need love and nutritious food, a warm and comfortable place to sleep in your house (not in your garage or yard), toys, vitamins, veterinary exams, dental care and grooming. Living in a cold climate, many dogs will need a coat when going outside in inclement weather. This is just a start.

We have 2 small dogs and spend around $300. month on their food, their dietary supplements and their animal health insurance. If more is needed, we would happily spend it, even if we had to sacrifice elsewhere.

Will you give Fido your time?

Puppies through to older dogs all need your time and attention to varying degrees. Puppies take the most time, but even an older dog needs exercise, playtime, and attention. If you think a bowl of food and water is all your dog wants to keep happy, lay in his paws. Would you like some food put out for you and then ignored?

I’ve seen too many families adopt a dog, leave the dog in the yard or garage all day without exercise or attention, and then wonder why behavior problems are manifesting

Unfortunately I have seen small dogs left alone only to drown in a backyard fountain. Large dogs that rip pillows in a garage may be returned to the shelter as incorrigible (these are often the first to be euthanized) and others left chained for their own good, as owners call it. None of these people should have a dog.

If you’re thinking about getting a new dog, when you’re not only excited but also committed to the welfare of your new family member, you’ll know you’re ready.

If you’re concerned about the quality of the food he’s eating, the veterinary care he’s receiving, the training, grooming, exercise, and time together that only you and your family can provide, you’re ready for a dog.

My wife and I took our dogs on our honeymoon to California’s wine country. Why? Because they are members of our family. No one else would make sure their medication and care is managed as well as we do. And most importantly, we wanted them with us. We stayed in a wonderful lodge and found fantastic dog friendly restaurants and activities everywhere.
