Dog Behavior Series 7 – Why Do Dogs Shake?

Without timely treatment, urinary tract infection in cats can become a serious problem. There are a few proven home remedies for cats with UTIs that will solve the problem.

Urinary tract infections can be effectively treated with an herbal tea made from various antiseptic and disinfecting herbs such as ursi, horsetail, juniper berry, split herb, corn clover, nettle and marshmallow leaves.

Mix 1/2 teaspoon of Uva Ursi leaves with 1/2 teaspoon of horsetail and 1/2 teaspoon of juniper berries. Add half a liter of water, bring to a boil and simmer for 10-15 minutes. Remove from the heat and add 1/2 teaspoon each of the cleaver, corn silk, nettle, and marshmallow leaf. Cover the mixture and let it cool. Give a dropper every three hours.

Uva ursi has an antiseptic effect and cleans the urinary tract. It’s a bitter-tasting herb and you can neutralize the bitterness by adding some vegetable glycerin to the mix. Horsetail disinfects the urinary tract and juniper berries have an antiseptic and diuretic effect. Cleaver and cornsilk are soothing kidney tonics and also slightly diuretic. Nettle is another strengthening herb that nourishes the entire system. Cornsilk and marshmallow are soothing herbs and help prevent urinary tract irritation from the cleansing herbs.

For acute infections, add one drop of Echinacea tincture for every five pounds of body weight to the mixture and administer at the intervals noted above until infection clears.

Other home remedies for cats with UTIs include cranberries and blueberries, which help prevent bacteria from building up in the urinary tract tissues. Cranberry juice extract capsules and blueberry juice will do the job. They help control the infection and also acidify the urine.

Barley water is an excellent remedy for urinary tract infections. Boil 25 g pearl barley in a little water for a few minutes. Strain and add a liter of boiling water. Reduce by half and add some honey and 100 ml grape juice. Give four drops daily.

You can also help your cat by using natural remedies to relieve pain. Cantharis is very useful for cats that are struggling to urinate. It is strongly recommended if there is blood in the urine. Give two to three pellets of potency 30C 2-3 times a day.

Drinking extra fluids is also important in treating urinary tract infections. So encourage your cat to drink more water and add water or tea to their food. Drinking all of that extra fluid helps flush out toxins as your cat’s bladder is emptied regularly. Make sure the water is clean. Filtered water or spring water is preferable, as chemicals in drinking water cause some cats to avoid drinking, resulting in thickening of the urine that hinders the bladder from emptying regularly.

Strengthen your cat’s urinary tract by supplying vitamin C. This has an anti-inflammatory effect and strengthens the bladder mucosa. Depending on your cat’s weight, give 250-500 mg twice a day. However, vitamin C can cause diarrhea, so you need to choose the dosage correctly.

Traditional treatments for UTIs in cats rely on urine and blood tests to identify bacteria causing the infection and administer antibiotics to eliminate it. The natural remedies for cats discussed above aim to treat along with boosting immunity to reduce recurrence.
