Perhaps this article should have been called “Gardening Etiquette for Your Dog.” This article is about what dogs do in the garden! No one knows exactly why “a dog eats plants” and anything else that smells and tastes good. Maybe it’s to enjoy yourself, can’t resist something that smells or tastes good, or even boredom, but it will always be the destruction of your most prized plants! However, there are things in your yard that can kill your beloved dog that he seems attracted to. Wandering Jew, ground cover, is an example. If your dog eats Wandering Jew, it can make your dog sick. Eat enough of it and it could kill your dog. Other toxic plants that are harmful to your dog are hippeastrum bulbs, rhubarb leaves, jasmine, lantana to name a few but there are others. Some symptoms to look out for may include nausea, difficulty breathing, weakness, restlessness, and convulsions. If you think your dog has ingested poisonous plants, by all means take him to the vet immediately.
Mulch, fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides can be other things your dog likes to eat in your yard. Eating fresh blood and bone manure and chicken manure will attract your dog but is harmless in most cases. Dogs are exposed by digging up your yard, chewing on pellets, and sniffing around shortly after insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides have been applied. Of course, keep all this well and out of the reach of pets and children. Vets see cases of dogs that have eaten snail pellets every year and the treatment isn’t pleasant, so be careful.
Chocolate is one of our favorite treats and it can even be deadly for your dog. Because of this, cocoa mulch can be fatal to dogs (and cats) if it contains an ingredient called “Obromine.” It smells like chocolate and really attracts dogs. In turn, if they ingest this mulch, it can be deadly.
However, it is okay for your dog to eat nut grass and other long grass to aid in digestion or to throw up. It’s the natural way they have to deal with an upset stomach.
It doesn’t matter how well fed your pooch is, beware, puppies, bitzers and pure breeds cannot distinguish a toxic good smell or taste when foraging in the yard.
So keep your dog safe and away from poisonous plants in your garden.
