Dog Behavior Series 7 – Why Do Dogs Shake?

Aggression in dogs is the result of many causes. There may be a trigger that can trigger aggression, for example if your dog was attacked or felt threatened as a puppy and this was not properly resolved, or it could be that your dog has dominance issues. For whatever reason, aggression in dogs, especially bulldogs, needs to be addressed immediately and effectively. Because of their strong build, American Bulldogs can be dangerous dogs with anger issues. It is paramount that this is rectified immediately for the safety of everyone including the dog.

The Source of Aggressive Behavior in American Bulldogs

A critical age for socializing a dog is 6 weeks. At this point, training your dog should begin, beginning with teaching him not to bite. In order to socialize your dog, you need to familiarize him with how to interact with people and other dogs. it can last 14 weeks, but can also extend over a longer period of time.

There are a number of factors that need to be considered. Initially, a puppy must be with its mother and littermates until it is 8 weeks old. Between 8 and 10 weeks of age, treat your puppy gently and avoid harsh discipline at all costs. Aggressive behavior in dogs can be induced by treating them harshly when they are young, such as yelling or hitting them. Appropriate socialization with people and other dogs must be in place by the time the puppy is 14 weeks old to avoid future aggression issues.

Many influences can trigger actual aggression. It’s not set in stone, but some dog breeds are more prone to aggression than others, genetics and heredity can and do play a part. Also, unneutered or unneutered dogs are more prone to aggression.

The environment in which the dog lives is by far the most important concern when it comes to aggressive behavior. A frightened dog or one that has been previously attacked by another dog, a dog living in poor conditions, punitive owners, or lack of socialization are key factors in dogs exhibiting aggressive behavior.

The need to establish a pack pecking order can encourage aggression. A dog testing for dominance may do so through posturing, biting, and other aggressive behaviors. It is important for you as the owner/master to establish dominance with your dog from a young age so that your dog does not try to take control of the home.

Stop and control aggressive behavior

Your dog will become sexually mature at 14 months and if he exhibits aggressive behavior, particularly after he has been spayed or neutered, it is wise to seek appropriate help with training. It is important to establish yourself as the leader of the pack. Never reward aggressive behavior, especially if the behavior is caused by fear.

Make sure there is strong leadership around the house, train your dog to respond to commands, and that you are responsible for feeding and walking times. Giving in to your dog’s demands and letting him go when he behaves badly will cause him to show aggression towards other people.

Defensive aggression from fear can lead a dog to lash out at a person as improper socialization may have occurred at some point. Find training with a dog behaviorist who can work with acclimating the dog to the social environment; It is important that these dogs are kept away from young children as they can be seen as a direct threat to the dog.

Aggressive behavior in dogs is a massive problem that many owners face, but don’t despair, it can be addressed. If aggression escalates into an attack, expect serious consequences. So seek professional help immediately.
