I was given the task of tail docking a litter of puppies and the only reason I did it was because I wanted to know how to do it myself as I think I know as much as I can about my dogs should and I knew a vet would do this and they charge for it and I wanted to know how to do it myself.
Well luckily for me I know a woman who breeds dogs and she has a 1 hour show on animal planet and she has been breeding and breeding dogs for years and luckily for me I know her!
Now I don’t recommend this to the beginner or the person who can’t handle it. In some countries it is illegal to dock a dog’s tail. In some countries, like the United States, they still do and recommend it because the Cocker Spaniel dog’s tail gets too bushy that it picks up all sorts of things and becomes a big mess pretty quickly. This is the main reason the tails are docked.
There are several ways to dock dog tails. One option is with a band that you put around the pup’s tail and it will eventually cause the tail to just fall off. Some vets will tell you different times to cut the tail, if you ask 5 different vets you may get several different time frames. Usually 2 to 3 days is normal but you should always check with your vet first and let them know what you are doing.
When we did we also removed the extra claw dogs they don’t use and you don’t want them snagging on anything while they’re playing or jumping around.
Some of the items we would need to dock the tails would be sterilized scissors, a flaming iron, or a soldering iron, one with a small tip that gets red-hot. Some rubbing alcohol, cotton swabs and fresh clean towels.
She taught me how to tie a tight rubber band around puppies tails and the reason you want to do it early in life is because they can’t feel it at least that’s what people say and when I did it it’s like everything, they notice but they don’t freak out.
After we clip the tail in the right spot, you can ask your vet or check online. I remember when I took my litter to my vet a long time ago he didn’t seem to know much about tail docking and he asked me where to tail clip, luckily I already knew and he is it the vet.
After cutting off the tails you would take the heating iron and place it directly on the spot where you just cut it, this sounds like the brutal part but it is necessary to keep the pup from bleeding. If you harden the fresh cut for even a second, the iron will burn it and stop it from bleeding. You would use the rubbing alcohol to sterilize everything and clean the puppy tails.
My friend who raises dogs taught me how to dock my own tail and she had a lot of experience and does all the dog shows, she loves to show off her dogs and she had a TV show about it that I saw . When I littered for the second time, I asked my then 18-year-old son to help me with it. He helped me with it and when it was over he told me he never wanted to do it again, he felt like he was going to pass out he told me and it sure isn’t for everyone.
These were the only 2 litters of puppies I’ve ever done myself and I had them done by the vet again and even for that I found another vet that had way more experience and he charged about half that of the first one Vet accused me. I wanted to experience doing it myself because I just had to know.
