If you’re a cat lover, listen up because this particular insight into cat behavior might surprise you.
Do you lovingly seek your cat’s affection? Well, let’s face it, there are two big questions who were asked by cat lover, and others alike. And these are:
1. Can cats really bond with us?
2. As desperate cat lovers, what can we do to get more affection from our beloved cats?
In other words, can cats be encouraged to relate to us in loving ways and keep each other company like their dogs can?
Let’s look at what might be possible answers to these two ingrained questions that annoy cat lovers and dog lovers alike. for decades!
And you’ll get some untold pointers on how to bond better with your cat in the meantime!
First we need to look at the nature of a cat’s essence, their souls if you will, to give us some clues to answer this cat behavior question.
When you have an animal that has been with humans for over 5000 years, there must be something profound that both humans and cats pull out of that relationship. Something that will keep them together for so long, and no doubt for eons to come!
Imagine, say in the year 3000, we could have technology to travel through space in luxurious planes, and of course, one of the first things people want to take with them is their favorite book, their favorite music and… theirs Cat!
But why is it like that? There has to be a level of bond between cats and humans that is above that of many other animals that make us feel so connected to them, wanting to share our life experiences with them… because our feelings tell us that those feelings are both Ways.
But, is this really the truth? Do cats mainly use us for food and warmth? Or is there a level of emotion behind the cat’s behavior that is on a higher level and similar to the feelings we have for them?
Those are legitimate questions. First, let’s take a look at our human emotional responses to our cats.
Our obsession with cats – yes, let’s admit it!
When humans first encountered cats, it was probably a campfire. This has not been proven, although it is a strong possibility.
Why a campfire?
Well, cats love warmth and probably couldn’t resist sitting around an artificial campfire. So they sat there, appreciating the warmth and perhaps also realizing that they don’t have to search. And then people were drawn to her cuteness. More likely it was her kittens who could have formed that bond. If they had interacted, they would have shown cute playfulness and would snuggle up to each other while nursing.
Now the question is, can a cat have cuddles and playfulness without the feelings of tenderness and indulgence?
We’ll get to that in a moment. Let’s take another example from history.
It was documented 5000 years ago that cats were domesticated into both Egyptian and Indian cultures at about the same time. In fact, for a period of over 2000 years, there was such respect and admiration for the cat in Egypt that the penalty for anyone who killed a cat was death.
During this time, a Roman soldier accidentally killed a cat and was nearly lynched by a crowd witnessing the event. This turned into a political conflict and is believed to be one of the events that led to the war between Egypt and Rome!
So, the humble cat caused all of this! An animal that causes people to be irrational about them.
But does the cat reciprocate our feelings?
An example that might help us with this question comes from Jeffrey Masson, who wrote The Nine Emotional Lives of Cats. Among his many examples of bonding, he discovers that his cats put up with getting soaked just to be with him:
“Like most cats, mine don’t like rain. But when Leila, Ilan, Manu and I walk up the hill in the evening in the rain, the cats are so devoted that they come with us… there’s no question the cats do something because they want to… Besides, since they only do something then walking in the rain when we’re there, never alone, the love of our companionship must be a strong part of their enjoyment…”
It gets even better. The strength of our bond actually increases as our cat’s behavior and emotional responses match our emotional needs. Some people who genuinely love their cat’s attention and want the full range of their personality find heaven, and the cat too, for example if they have a Siamese who can show a strong desire to be on their lap is every comfort night, runs around like crazy when she plays with it, and is also mildly neurotic and anxious when too busy…
So there is some food for thought for you! You know you have a glimpse into the secret workings behind cat behavior, how humans and cats really feel about each other, and how cat behavior can be linked to their deeper feelings for us in more ways than we ever thought possible.
