The power of being present in a relationship

Dog Behavior Series 7 – Why Do Dogs Shake?

Once you know that drinking more water is important to your cat’s health and that drinking fountains are a great way to encourage your cat to drink more water, the next step is to decide which fountain is right for your cat is.

The two main considerations when choosing a brand and model are what the cat water fountain is made of and how your cat prefers to drink. We’ll take a closer look at these two elements to help you choose the right drinking fountain for your cat.

Construction of cat fountain

cat fountain are either made of plastic, stainless steel or ceramic. There are even differences within plastic fountains as some are made from cheap plastic that scratches easily and others are made from higher quality plastic that is more durable.

In general, we strongly recommend that you buy a ceramic or stainless steel fountain and avoid plastic fountains. All cat drinking fountains have plastic construction, usually around the pump or motor housing. The most important thing is to avoid fountains with plastic bowls or drinking surfaces; anywhere your cat’s skin can touch it. There are mutliple reasons for this.

First, some cats can have severe skin reactions to plastics. It’s not clear if this is due to a direct allergy to the plastic itself, or if it’s bacterial and fungal toxins that can reside in scratches in the plastic. In both cases, reactions can range from mild irritation of the skin, generally on the chin (known as chin acne), to deep infections that require cleaning and antibiotics.

Secondly, scratches in the plastic can hardly be avoided. Higher quality plastics (found in the more expensive plastic fountains) are more scratch resistant, but your thorough cleaning will eventually create micro-scratches that allow bacterial growth. Mold and bacterial growth can create odors and odors that can cause your cat to avoid the fountain.

There is no point in buying a drinking fountain for your cat’s health if it causes health problems or your cat avoids drinking from it.

Cat Drinking Fountain Design

The next and equally important consideration is the design of the fountain. There are 2 main types of fountains, those that have water cascading down the side of the fountain to meet a large pool (like the Pioneer Pet models) and those that have a cascading stream design similar to water pouring out Flowing from your sink or flowing bathtub faucet (Drinkwell 360 models).

Does your cat prefer to drink from puddles, large bowls or flat surfaces? In this case, choose a model with a large pool, such as B. the Pioneer pet models, which are available in both ceramic and stainless steel. However, if your cat is always lying on your counter or tub begging you to turn on the faucet, the stainless steel Drinkwell 360 model is for you.

Considerations for households with multiple cats

Many people have more than one cat, and those cats may have different drinking preferences. If you have one cat that loves the faucet and another that loves to drink from flat surfaces, unfortunately there isn’t a ceramic or stainless steel model that’s right for both of your cats. For the health of all your cats, we recommend that you buy a ceramic or stainless steel model of each type. If you absolutely can’t, the Drinkwell Platinum model might be a reasonable compromise. Although it’s made of high-quality plastic, it’s still plastic, so keep that in mind when choosing this fountain.

summary

Consider the Stainless Steel Drinkwell 360 if your cat likes to drink from the tap or bathtub. Choose a Pioneer Pet Raindrop Drinking Fountain if your cat prefers to drink from flat surfaces.

For your cat’s health and the freshest, cleanest water possible, always choose a ceramic or stainless steel drinking fountain whenever possible.
