How to help a cat and dog get along

Many people love both dogs and cats. They feel like they can’t both have pets in the household as dogs and cats don’t usually get along. With the right socialization, dogs and cats can live together in harmony. Here are some tips to help dogs and cats get along well together.

  • If you are bringing a cat or dog into the house with an existing pet, make sure there is enough space to give them some space. Until pets get used to each other, they may need to be kept separate. The animals should be kept separate for three days until they meet face to face. This gives them a chance to get to know the smells and allows the new pet to get used to their home.

  • To introduce the animals to their smells, pet the dog and let the cat smell your hand. Do the same with the dog. Also change the rooms where the animals are kept. Let the dog go into the room where the cat was kept, and the cat should go where the dog was staying. This also gives them a chance to get to know the smells. When the animals get used to their smell, let them look under the door. They can see each other but are not allowed to run or attack each other.

  • When introducing the animals, make sure they are relaxed. If the cat runs away, it’s not time for getting to know each other. Once the cat is calm; hold it. Another family member should bring the dog into the room on a leash. Allow them to look at and smell each other. Allow them to look and get closer too.

  • Be sure to show love and affection to each animal. Animals, like humans, can become jealous and compete for their owner’s attention. Both pets need to be loved and shown that they don’t need to compete for your attention.

  • Although dogs and cats seem to get along, it’s important to keep them separate when no one is home. This will help prevent injuries. If the dog barks or the cat tries to play too roughly, redirect the behavior. Instead of yelling at the dog, divert its attention to another activity. Yelling can lead to a negative feeling associated with the cat. If the dog behaves well around the cat, praise it for that behavior. Sound very happy when you do the praise. This helps the dog associate positive feelings with the cat.

  • Cats need their space. There should be some sort of object, such as a scratching post, where the cat can go when it wants to get away from the dog. The dog should not be able to reach the cat. If the dog has pushed the cat into a corner, attacks can occur here. If the cat manages to get away from the dog, then it’s fine and won’t attack.

  • When introducing dogs and cats together, it’s important to have realistic expectations. If one of the pets is used to being the only one in the house, it will take time to get used to this new addition. When they first meet, the pets are curious about each other and about this new scent they are selling. Let them be curious while you keep a close eye on the situation. It will take time for the pets to get used to each other before they get along and maybe even become friends. To do this, both animals must feel safe.

  • If you have a cat and a dog in the same household, it’s important to be patient. The cat may be afraid of the dog and want to hide. Let the cat stay in its safe place. Slowly introduce the dog into the room. It’s best to take things slowly so the pets can get used to each other and feel safe. This will help them get along and live peacefully in the same house.
