There’s an age-old question: Are leaders born or made? When they are born they seem capable of handling the challenges of leadership in any situation. When made, it requires constant training to navigate new scenarios. Whether leaders are born or made, if they don’t have all the answers, they can turn to more experienced leaders for advice. However, what happens when everyone is faced with a situation that no one has ever seen before, like the recent global pandemic?
When leaders are born it seems like they magically have answers and a style that fits all occasions. Some call them intuitive leaders who seem to have a way of navigating themselves and others through challenging times. And 2020 has ushered in a challenge that has forced everyone to change and deal with a new normal. These are the times when the multitudes of leaders are looking for direction.
You just have to ask yourself if born leaders have limits. Are you ready for all occasions? Are they really born with the ability to lead? Or did you grow up in an environment where leadership was part of your education? There are many people who grew up in a home whose parents were entrepreneurs. Or maybe her father was the CEO of a large company. These children would have been exposed to conversations with their parents or their parents’ peers about being responsible for the well-being of others, making difficult decisions, focusing on a vision and mission, the costs of hiring and firing Understanding people and many more aspects of leadership. On the surface, it seems like they were born with leadership in their DNA. The fact is that they were brought up almost from birth.
If we look historically at leaders like Genghis Khan, Alexander the Great, and Hannibal, we see that their fathers were also great leaders—kings or generals. The men I have named above grew up with an education unlike most. Perhaps one could say that their surroundings made them.
At the same time, there are those who have never lived in an executive environment. They either sought leadership mentors, undertook formal training, or worked in an organization that offered training and opportunities to use leadership training. It would be obvious to most that they were made leaders.
Against this background, what is happening to managers today? The world is facing a situation in which no leader in recent history has been involved. While there was a pandemic in 1919, how many of today’s leaders experienced it? In addition, the world is now more connected than ever by a global economy. In one way or another, we all depend on other countries to help us with manufacturing, food or services. This time we’re really in it together.
Perhaps this is the time when we learn to use each other in ways we never have in the past. It can also be a great opportunity to retrain ourselves to deal with constant change. I am not saying that there is never stability. I say the world is changing faster than ever due to technology and globalization. The global pandemic could be the wake-up call for all of us to develop a new mindset that is more agile and better able to deal with constant change and uncertainty.
It requires a mindset willing to venture into entirely new paradigms while maintaining the integrity of existing business models. New paradigms often require new skills, knowledge, ways of thinking and the ability to invent information that no one has seen. It also requires a reasonable risk tolerance. On the one hand, the new paradigm can be disruptive and hugely successful, like the iPhone. On the other hand, it may miss the mark and fail. Except that the insights gained can be the catalyst for other possibilities like post-its.
For leaders to build such a nimble organization, leaders would need to undergo a significant amount of training and change. The next step would be to train the rest of the organization. This type of training doesn’t mean leadership will have all the answers in the face of today’s global pandemic. It simply means that the transformative training allows them to be more mentally agile. This allows them not to be as reactive as people operating in the status quo. The transformative leaders will be better able to step back and scan the landscape for opportunity as they tap into the intelligence of those around them.
