To become an armed security guard and carry a firearm on duty, you must first complete additional hours of training specializing in firearm handling and safety. When you complete your training, you will receive a card that allows you to legally carry a firearm while on duty.

The training programs to become an armed security guard vary from state to state, as does the number of hours required during that training, but all include a rigorous, multi-level background check to ensure you are qualified to carry a firearm .

Applications to become an armed guard must be made through your state’s Department of Justice or Security Bureau.

What Are the Benefits of Becoming an Armed Security Guard?

There are a number of good reasons why you should consider intensive training to carry a firearm on duty.

First and foremost, you’ll get paid more. For this simple reason alone, many unarmed security forces go through additional training.

Second, you have more opportunities for career advancement. There are many other types of security jobs (which in turn pay more) that are only open to those qualified to carry a firearm.

Third, you are better protected. Hopefully you never have to use your firearm on duty, but the truth is you can get into a dangerous situation that a gun can solve. Sometimes just having a firearm with you while on duty, even if it just stays in your holster, can minimize dangerous situations.

What will weapon training teach me?

Formal firearms training courses will teach you about gun storage, self-defense, and specific laws regarding the use of your firearm.

Gun storage is all about how to keep your gun safe during an attack. It’s scary to think about, but your weapon can be taken from you and used against you. Training will help you learn how to store your gun in dangerous situations and ensure it is locked securely and properly while you carry it.

Self-defense is self-explanatory, but essentially you will learn techniques to help you defend yourself both with and without your firearm. Many of you have no previous experience with a firearm, so you’ll be shooting at the range so you at least get familiar with what it feels like. Some people find that carrying a gun is just too much for them at this point and not something they want to get involved with.

After all, there are a lot of laws related to how you carry your gun and how and when you can use it. The exact rules vary from state to state, but they are all important to know, not only because they will help you pass the firearms training test and earn your card, but because they are designed to save lives and you and to keep everyone else safe around you.

Where can I get armed security guard training?

If you are a former police officer, licensed private investigator, peace officer, or military member, you are exempt from the training hours required to become an armed security guard. However, you must still register through the state to obtain your firearm possession ID.

If you are not one of the above, you must again complete the hours of training required by your state.

Please visit your state’s criminal justice website or security agency’s website for more information.
