Dog Behavior Series 7 – Why Do Dogs Shake?

One question a prospective Bernese Mountain Dog owner might ask is “how adaptable is the dog?” There are different answers that you will get from different people, the truth is that the Bernese Mountain Dog adapts very easily to any type of environment, many becoming strongly attached to their families within the first year of life. If you buy a Bernese dog after the age of one year, the dog may have bonding issues and have trouble adjusting to a new environment.

It is common for a younger Bernese Mountain Dog to be more adaptable than an older one. This is because a younger dog gets used to a routine and quickly learns commands and knows how to behave appropriately. An older Bernese has already adjusted to another family’s routines and preferences, but with a little training and patience, the dog can make a gentle, protective companion. Older Bernese will need time to bond with the new family before they can settle comfortably into a new routine and environment.

If you are buying a Bernese from a breeder, remember that the puppy will need loving discipline and gentle guidance. Setting ground rules early eliminates the likelihood of problems. The dog prefers life indoors and it’s not a good idea to try to introduce the dog to an outdoor habitat, but with a long, thick, heavy coat, the Bernese can adapt to outdoor living with relative ease. If you decide to make the dog an outdoor living space, it’s important to note that you could end up with a dog that is constantly barking, aggressive, and overly hyperactive.

The breed is very energetic and if left to their own devices, the Bernese can become frustrated and bored. The dog can become destructive and uncontrollable, and with a dog of this size, that’s something to keep in mind. This makes a Bernese’s behavior more predictable and temperable if the dog is allowed to live indoors with the family, just make sure you train them from a young age and problems should be kept to a minimum. It is also best to set up a daily training regiment for your Berners. A good 20-30 minutes of running or walking will burn off all that excess energy, build muscle and help your mountain dog be more relaxed around the house. Burning all the excess energy will drastically reduce the amount of bad chewing, ie. Chewing on furniture, shoes, etc.

Even when moving from house to house, the Berner proves to be an adaptable dog. As long as the dog has his family, he will be more than happy in almost any situation. You can take the dog with you on trips and teach it to do almost any kind of trick. Remember that the dog needs attention and praise, in certain situations that are unfamiliar to him, the Bernese, like any other breed of dog, needs time to adapt.
