First I’m going to start by telling you that I have and live the life of a Christian comedian, so I’m going to tell you what I have done and must do to become successful in what I do. The world of Christian comedy is becoming more and more inundated with people trying to tell funny jokes to a clean Christian audience. To be honest this is not an easy task because not many people know about the business Christian comedy.
At first glance at the word Christian comedy, many people assume that they will hear Bible passages and church jokes all the time, but I disagree. As a Christian comedian, I’ve experienced a few things that weren’t quite as funny, such as not getting all the work I did when I was a secular comedian. A lot of venues didn’t want to book me because they thought I would come in and give a sermon, but I had to prepare a show and get it on DVD so I could show them the show I was going to do.
So you need to make sure you know what audience you’re trying to target. My goal was never to appeal to an audience that wanted to hear a bunch of ignorant material about sex, drugs and violence because there was so much more to tell. I will now share with you the steps to starting a successful career in the Christian comedy business.
Step 1) Know your target audience
– In the comedy business you have to have an audience that you want to appeal to. This is important because when writing comedy material, you need to know what people like to hear and what they remember most about you. Many comedians spend years writing before they finally have the perfect set that people will remember.
Step 2) Consistency
– One of the most important things is to be consistent. When chasing a dream, it takes persistence to make things happen. If you only do one show a year it will be difficult to perfect your craft so you have to stay on stage and keep writing jokes/material. You also have to realize that the more people see you, the more they will remember your face and your footage, so be consistent.
Step 3) Networking
-Networking is very important in the comedy business because it’s not about how many jokes you can write, tell, or how many minutes you can perform. It’s about who you know and who knows you! A lot of comedians use each other for work, which is good because nobody knows everyone. They need to stay close to like-minded comedians who believe in maintaining a network of club managers, church group leaders and promoters on their contact list.
Step 4) Stay around positive people and develop thick skin
– You have to stay with positive people to be successful in anything, especially comedy because people will kill your dream before you even get started. A lot of people wish they could be brave enough to stand on a stage and tell jokes, but because they can’t, they will try to pull you down and expect you to be like them. If you stick with the right people, they will encourage you and even help you by telling you a story or maybe even a joke or two that you can use on stage. Don’t be put off at all by critics’ comments.
Step 5) Do you have products to sell
Finally, you must have products that you can sell to your audience. These items should consist of CDs, DVDs, t-shirts, hats, and anything else that doesn’t cost you a lot of money up front, among other things. Your goal shouldn’t be to make a big profit, but it should be to keep your face in the eyes of your audience. A lot of comedians have learned this way of doing business, and for a lot of them it works. Come up with unique marketing and advertising concepts and you will be the comedian who stays booked.
If you follow these few steps I’ve listed, you’re well on your way to becoming a successful Christian comedian.
